Sow Operations
- The sow barns have specialized functions including breeding, gestation, farrowing and employee administrative functions. They are linked to a computer network for round-the-clock monitoring of building security and environment.
- In the breeding barns, Seaboard Foods uses 100% artificial insemination.
- Pregnancy is checked with ultrasound technology.
- From the breeding barn, the pregnant sows are moved to the gestation barn where they are put on a special diet for the 114-day gestation period.
The sows are then moved to the farrowing barn where they give birth to between 10 and 12 piglets. Sows nurse the piglets for about three weeks and are then returned to the breeding barn.
- Seaboard Foods achieves approximately twenty-one weaned pigs/sows per year.
Nursery Operations
- The 12-pound piglets are moved to nursery barns where they stay for seven weeks until they weigh approximately 45 pounds. From the nurseries, feeder pigs are transported to a grow/finish farm.
Finisher Operations
- A Seaboard Foods grow/finish unit is normally comprised of 10 buildings.
- A complex farm manager at each site is responsible for monitoring animal care, animal health and equipment.
- Specialized crews trained in animal moving assist with the unloading, load out, health care and sanitation of each unit.
- In the finishing barn, the pigs gain 1.5-1.7 pounds a day for approximately 20 weeks until they reach a finished weight of approximately 280 pounds.

- Seaboard Foods currently uses approximately 40 million bushels of locally grown corn and grain sorghum each year.
- The 30 million bushels of grain purchased annually by Seaboard Foods is equivalent to the average capacity of 20 elevators.
